Remember back in June when I said I would be finished with this project by August? It was a goal I had hoped to keep but the Universe had other ideas. But here I am, with winter almost upon us, and I am finally posting the schematic I was most looking forward to creating, the EV Suits. I guess it is better to be a little late then never.
And here she is…
I love the NX EV suits. I loved them the first minute I saw them onscreen. They looked real and something someone could actually use. I also loved the color and the style. That shade of copper really popped against the greys, blacks and blues of the ship. It has also been a joy to render them. The detailing on the suits is extraordinary and drawing it all out has been so much fun. I even learned a few things about them while doing my research. I had never noticed production had added so many new details to them as the seasons moved along.
But my most cherished part about this schematic is the “bottle suit”. Ever since Doug Drexler posted his sketches for the NX “Bottle Suit” on his blog I have been itching to take a crack at finishing off the design. And now, after more than a year a half, I am finally presenting it to you. The front and side are almost direct copies from Mr. Drexler’s CG renders. The back portion was based on his pencil sketches. I did make a few tiny changes to get everything to work properly though. Hopefully no one will notice. But I have added my own flare to everything, just as I did with the escape pod, and I am very pleased with my results. (Here is Doug’s original post on the subject.)
I have also come up with my own name for the bottle suit, the L.E.R.C suit or Long-term Extravehicular Reinforced Containment Suit. The TNG Technical Manual referred to this type of Extravehicular “container” as an AMP Suit or Augmented Personnel Module. I thought it would be a nice for the 22nd Century to have a unique name for this nifty apparatus. (Just a word to the wise, thinking up an acronym is a lot more difficult than you might think. Do not attempt one unless you really think you need it.)
And next up on my list is the Uniforms and Ranks. After that I will complete the Side Cutaway, which will be my last schematic for the Enterprise Project. Unfortunately I am getting very busy again so it may be a while before I complete those last two, especially the cutaway. I set it aside several months ago because I could not find the right graphic style for it. I didn’t want something generic like the LCARS MSD’s shown in 24th Century Trek but detailing everything like the floor plans would take months to do. I think I have a solution though. But stay tuned for the grand finale. I just pray I can get it done before the first of the year.
As always, let me know what you think. I am going to be out of town for the next few days but I will answer questions when I get back.

Wow what detail. I just love the EV SUITS. Thank you for all your hard work. Look forward to more goodies to come.
Comment by Richard November 14, 2010 @ 3:02 pmMy only real problem with the EV suits was the colour. NASA uses white because, I presume, it’s easier to spot out in space and therefore easier to keep track of fellow crewmembers.
Gold and grey don’t seem that realistic to me.
